A Ukrainian counteroffensive that has already gained thousands of miles is breaking through Russian lines in the southern Kherson region

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at his daily briefing that "with better tank units ... the enemy managed to penetrate the depths of our defenses."

But Konashenkov said Russian troops had retreated back into a defensive position and were "continuing to inflict massive fire" on Kiev's forces.
