Volodymyr Zelensky is Time Magazine's 2022 Person of the Year

Time magazine has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and "the spirit of Ukraine" as its 2022 Person of the Year.

The award is given to the event or person who had the greatest influence on global events over the past 12 months.

Other finalists included protesters in Iran, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the US Supreme Court. A magazine editor said the decision was "the clearest in memory".

"In a world defined by its divisiveness, there was a meeting around this thing, around this country," wrote Edward Felsenthal. He added that the "spirit of Ukraine" referred to Ukrainians around the world, including many who were "fighting behind the scenes".

The magazine said Mr Zelenskiy inspired Ukrainians and was internationally recognized for his courage in resisting the Russian invasion. "Zelensky's success as a wartime leader rested on the fact that courage is contagious," the statement said.
