Ambrosini explains the ‘benefit’ and the ‘risk’ of Pioli’s rotation vs. Bologna

Massimo Ambrosini has summarized the positives and negatives of Stefano Pioli’s decision to significantly rotate the starting lineup for the match against Bologna.

Pioli opted to make 10 changes to the XI from the game against Napoli midway through, with all but Mike Maignan starting the game from the bench, meaning several substitutes will get their chance.

However, the problem is that Milan have yet to secure Champions League football next season, not even remotely close – so the decision to change the squad could threaten a top four finish.

Ambrosini spoke to DAZN before the game and was asked what he thought of Pioli’s decision to make so many changes in the big game, his comments were reported by MilanNews.

“The benefit is physical: those who will be in Naples on Tuesday will have to rest. “The risk is that the team has fewer points of reference,” he said.

“The advantage is physical for those who have played more. The risk is that the team has several points of reference. “It is different to play against someone who has not seen the field,” he said.

“All the players changed before Manchester against Pienza. But then nothing counted. Milan only had six days from one leg to another, and it had an impact. Of course, changing 10 is a lot.”

On his formation: “I’m not very sure of the three-man defensive solution, then they found Kjaer and Maignan … No one is stronger than him.

“It took him a few times, but when he did, he decided. Milan’s defensive phase has improved as they have more games and Maignan has his hands.”

De Ketelaere said: “We hope it will happen. These guys don’t have anything simple in mind: they have to be above everything else. We can give them an alibi, but they play for Milan. “There is no alibi now, he has to go there and good.”
