An Asian man opened fire at a dance venue in Monterey Park as the local community celebrated the Lunar New Year, police said.

Police have released photos and a description of the “homicide suspect.” The LA County Sheriff’s Department said the suspect is an “adult Asian male” wearing a black leather jacket, cap and glasses, adding that he should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

Police were involved in a dispute with a man they believe was responsible for killing 10 people in a mass shooting, AFP said, citing media reports.
Witnesses said the man fired indiscriminately with a semi-automatic weapon.

Police cautioned that the description of the shooter remains preliminary and did not provide any additional identifying details.

Captain Andrew Meyers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said officers responded to emergency calls around 10:20 p.m. Saturday and found people streaming out of the compound.

Footage posted on social media showed injured people on stretchers being taken to ambulances by paramedics.

US President Joe Biden said on Twitter that he and his wife, Jill, were “praying for those killed and injured in yesterday’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park”, adding: “I am following this situation closely”.

Tens of thousands of people gathered earlier in the day for the two-day Lunar New Year festival, one of Southern California’s largest. The second day of the festival, Sunday, was canceled after the attack.

The shooting was the deadliest in the US since a gunman killed 22 people at an elementary school in Uvalda, Texas last May 24.

Gun violence is a huge problem in the United States, which last year saw 647 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive, defined as an incident in which four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter.
