CHANDIGARH: Punjab Higher Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Sunday ordered a thorough probe after rumors of inappropriate videos of some female students of Chandigarh University spread on social media.

A protest broke out on campus after the video was allegedly leaked. The protestors alleged that the student shot videos of the girls taking a bath in the hostel, which later went viral on social media. They also claimed that some female students living in the hostel attempted suicide after the incident. A top university official denied the claims.

RS Bawa, Vice-Chancellor, Chandigarh University said, “There are rumors that 7 girls have committed suicide, whereas the fact is that no girl attempted any such act. No girl was admitted to the hospital in the incident.” Bawa further said, “During the preliminary investigation conducted by the university, no objectionable video of any student was found except for a personal video taken by the girl which she shared with her boyfriend.

” However, the police said , that the student accused in the matter has been arrested. “The suspected girl sent her own videos to her boyfriend in Shimla. Other girls in the hostel saw her filming while she was in the washroom and panicked thinking she was filming videos of other girls,” Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Vivek Soni said.

“Forensic evidence is being collected. No suicide attempt has been reported yet. Medical records of the students were obtained. People should not heed any rumours,” he added. The protest took place at the university’s Ludhiana-Chandigarh road campus after midnight. During the protest, students shouted slogans of “We want justice”.

The police had to charge the students with canes to disperse them. The police said investigations the case is ongoing.

Chandigarh police today arrested a student from Mohali for allegedly leaking objectionable videos of other students of a private university.

Police seized her electronic devices and mobile phones, which will be sent for forensic examination.

The police also said that a case under section 354 c of IPC and IT Act has been registered against the accused girl at the Gharuan police station.

The accused girl has been identified as a first year MBA student.

Meanwhile, a video of the accused girl has now gone viral on social media where she is being interrogated by her invigilator and a group of girls regarding the incident.

According to reports, the accused student sent videos from her hostel roommates’ bathroom to a boy in Shimla.
