Here are two stories that are associated with Dussehra according to Hindu mythology:

  1. Lord Rama defeated Ravana

It is believed that on this day, Lord Ram, who was considered the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, defeated the ten-headed Ravana, the king of Lanka, because he kidnapped Lord Rama’s wife Sita and took her to his kingdom, where he kept her captive in the hope. marry her. According to the scriptures, when Lord Rama, accompanied by his brother Laxman and an army that included his devotee Hanuman, headed for Lanka to bring back Sita, he worshiped Goddess Durga and obtained her blessings to defeat Ravana. After nine days of fierce battle with Ravana, Lord Rama finally killed him on the tenth day. Since then, this day is celebrated as Dussehra.

  1. Goddess Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura

On this day, the nine-day worship of Goddess Durga ends and the idols of Goddess Durga along with her children are taken to a nearby river, sea or ocean and immersed. It is believed that on this day Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura and protected the world. Mahishasura was blessed by Lord Brahma that no human or god could kill him.

By abusing his power, he began to create terror on earth and in heaven. He defeated Indra, the king of heaven, and then all the gods turned to Lord Vishnu for help. Then Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma combined all their powers together to create a female form called Durga – an incarnation of Goddess Parvati – to defeat the demon as the demon had the advantage that no human or god could kill him.

And after a nine-day battle, Goddess Durga killed Mahishasura. Devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga during the period called Navratri, which will begin on September 26, 2022 and last until October 5, 2022.
