Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno-Palpur National Park (KPNP) is set to welcome eight cheetahs tomorrow under an agreement signed earlier this year between India and Namibia.

A female cheetah and two brothers who hunt together as a team are among eight big cats that will be part of the reintroduction project.

The cheetahs will be flown into the country on a special cargo flight and transferred to the national park the same day, officials said. The cargo flight will now land directly at Gwalior instead of Jaipur as planned earlier. The decision, according to officials, will save time.

“A special cargo flight carrying the cheetahs will land at Gwalior around 6 am tomorrow. After clearing customs and other formalities, the cheetahs will be airlifted to Kuno National Park,” government sources told NDTV.

Special wooden sets that have the ability to move air were used to bring in the cheetah, news agency ANI said, quoting an official.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will tomorrow release the big cats in a national park in the state’s Sheopur district as part of his efforts to revitalize and diversify the country’s wildlife and habitats, his office in New Delhi said.

The large carnivore has been completely extirpated from India due to its use for coursing, sport hunting, overhunting and habitat loss. The government declared the cheetah extinct in the country in 1952.
