Gun Violence in America: A Look at the Oklahoma College Shooting

1 dead in Oklahoma college shooting, suspect in custody

A man shot another man at Rose State College in Oklahoma on Monday, according to police, who reported no other injuries after the campus was briefly placed on lockdown.

Midwest City Police Chief Sid Porter said the men were “acquainted from a domestic situation,” but did not elaborate on what exactly their relationship was or what led up to the shooting. He also did not say whether any of the men were students or employees of the school.

The campus has about 13,000 students and is just outside of Oklahoma City.

The video showed crime scene tape around the Rose State College downtown humanities building and several law enforcement agencies on campus.

Porter said the victim was shot once and that the suspect was confronted by officers who work on campus.

“They ordered him to drop the weapon, which he did, and they took him into custody,” Porter said.

Rose State College canceled classes for the rest of Monday after lifting the lockdown. A person who answered the phone at the university’s public safety office on Monday contacted police.

Porter said weeks before the shooting, students and staff at Rose State College completed a drill on what to do in the event of an active shooter.

“Things closed quickly,” Porter said. “I just think they did a fantastic job of listening to the school and everybody staying down and not panicking because we didn’t know what was going on.”
