Hundreds of supporters of Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro broke through police barricades and stormed Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court on Sunday in a dramatic protest against the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week.
A sea of protesters dressed in green and yellow flags flooded the seat of power in Brasilia, storming the floor of Congress and climbing to the roof of the iconic building to unfurl a banner calling on the Brazilian military: “INTERVENCE.”
Brazilian police used tear gas to repel hundreds of supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.
Social media footage showed rioters smashing doors and windows to enter the Capitol building, then streaming in en masse, destroying lawmakers’ offices and using a slanted lectern on the legislative floor as a slide as they shouted insults aimed at absent lawmakers.
