Louisville, Ky. – Five people died and six were injured in a shooting in downtown Louisville.

Louisville Metro Deputy Police Chief Paul Humphrey said at a news conference that an officer was shot at the Old National Bank around 8:30 a.m. Monday and shots were fired inside the building. The suspected shooter died at the scene, but Humphrey said it was unclear how the suspect died.

Five people were killed inside the building and six people, including a police officer, were taken to hospital with “various injuries”. It was not immediately clear whether the shooter was among the five people Humphrey said were killed inside.

“We cannot confirm the status of the person being transported at this time,” Humphrey said.

He said the investigation is ongoing, but “there is a general threat at this time.”

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshar tweeted that the event was taking place.

“Prayers for all the affected families and the city of Louisville,” Beshar tweeted.

There were many police officers at the scene. Louisville’s ATF and FBI said on Twitter that special agents were on scene to assist local law enforcement.

The shooting happened at the Old National Bank building on East Main Street, not far from Louisville Slugger Field and Waterfront Park. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg, in a tweet around 9 a.m., urged people to stay out of the area while police responded to the situation.

“Avoid the area around Slugger Field until further notice. We will update as soon as possible,” Greenberg tweeted.

The incident was the 15th mass shooting this year with four or more victims, according to the USA TODAY/Associated Press/Northeastern University database. According to the National Violence Archive, there were more than 140 mass shootings in which four or more victims were injured.
