On August 24, President Joe Biden announced a plan to forgive between $10,000 and $20,000 in student loan debt, and the White House assured borrowers that debt cancellation would occur before federal student loan repayments begin again on January 1, 2023. will have their debt automatically forgiven, and most of the estimated 40 million borrowers seeking student loan relief will have to apply for forgiveness.

The White House originally said the request to cancel student loan debt would be released in early October but pushed back the dates it would begin canceling the debt from October 17th to October 23rd. But the impending court decision could put the brakes on that.
