The incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. at the Joint Reserve Base of Naval Air Station Fort Worth and Lockheed.

Video taken by Kitt Wilder shows the plane hovering before hitting the runway. The jet then points nose-first into the ground and sends smoke into the air.

The pilot then ejects from the F-35.

At this time, the condition of the pilot and the cause of the problem are unknown.

Lockheed released a statement about the crash Thursday:

We are aware of the F-35B crash on the shared runway at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth and understand that the pilot ejected successfully. Safety is our priority and we will follow the appropriate investigative protocol.
