Time magazine has named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and “the spirit of Ukraine” as its 2022 Person of the Year.

The award is given to the event or person who had the greatest influence on global events over the past 12 months.

Other finalists included protesters in Iran, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and the US Supreme Court.

A magazine editor said the decision was “the clearest in memory”.

“In a world defined by its divisiveness, there was a meeting around this thing, around this country,” wrote Edward Felsenthal.
He added that the “spirit of Ukraine” referred to Ukrainians around the world, including many who were “fighting behind the scenes”. These include people like Ievgen Klopotenko, a chef who provided thousands of free meals to Ukrainians, and doctor Julija Payevska, who was captured and then released after three months in Russian captivity.

The magazine said Mr Zelenskiy inspired Ukrainians and was internationally recognized for his courage in resisting the Russian invasion.
“Zelensky’s success as a wartime leader rested on the fact that courage is contagious,” the statement said.

British trauma surgeon David Nott, who went to Ukraine to help the wounded in the war, is one of several others to appear on the cover of the magazine.

Women in Iran were Time’s heroes of 2022, and K-pop band Blackpink was recognized as Time’s Entertainer of the year.

American baseball player Aaron Judge was awarded Sportsman of the Year and Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh is Icon of the Year.

Elon Musk, who was last year’s winner, was again listed as a finalist. In 2021, his car company Tesla became the most valuable car company in the world.

The tradition began in 1927 – although he was Man of the Year then.

Other past winners have included former German dictator Adolf Hitler in 1938 and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was named Person of the Year in 2007.
