West Bengal: Trial run of maiden underwater metro in the country successful

Kolkata: For the first time in India, a metro has completed its journey under the river. After a long wait, India’s first metro on Wednesday passed under the iconic Hooghly river connecting the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah.


To witness the historic moment, Metro Railways General Manager, P Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, from Mahakaran (Writers Building, Kolkata) to Howrah Maidan Station (other side of the river) in Rake No. MR-612. He even prayed in Howrah. Reddy was also accompanied by another General Manager H.N. Jaiswal.

Later, MR 613, more rakes were also taken to Howrah Maidan station. “The trial run between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan (4.8 km) will continue for another seven months before it is opened for regular services,” said Reddy.

Kausik Mitra, CPRO/Metro Railway said it is a step towards a modern mode of transport.

Subway tunnel 32 meters below water level

“This is a historic moment for Metro Railway as after overcoming many hurdles we have managed to run the rake under the Hooghly river. It is a revolutionary step,” said Mitra.

With the tunnel located 32 meters below the water level, metro services are expected to stretch 520 meters under the Hooghly River in 45 seconds.

It is pertinent to mention that according to Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL) sources, a cost of around Rs 120 crore has been incurred for this.
