Chetan Sharma Steps Down: A Look at the Sting Video That Led to His Resignation

BCCI selection committee chairman Chetan Sharma resigned from his post early on 17 February 2023. He sent his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who reportedly accepted it. The resignation comes in the midst of a controversial sting operation conducted by Zee News which showed that Mr. Sharma exposed secret selection matters.

“Yes, Chetan submitted his resignation to BCCI secretary Jay Shah and his resignation was accepted. His position became untenable after the sting operation. He resigned voluntarily and was not asked to resign,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity on Friday.

Chetan Sharma was in Kolkata along with other members of the selection committee for the Ranji Trophy final between Bengal and Saurashtra. They were there to select the Irani Cup team.

It was learned that Chetan’s comments did not go down well with the BCCI top brass and the current members of the national team also lost faith in him.

“Coach Rahul Dravid, captains Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya have completely lost faith in him. He couldn’t sit across the table from them at the selection committee meetings because he lost all respect. He paid the price for being a big mouth,” another BCCI source said.

Mr. Sharma was seen allegedly revealing his internal conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli, along with serious allegations against some senior players in the team. He claimed that there was a clash of egos between former captain Virat Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

He also leveled allegations against some players that many of them were “using injections” to speed up their return to competitive cricket despite being 80-85% fit.

Talking about former captain Virat Kohli, he said Kohli started thinking of himself as “bigger than the board” and tried to “get back” at the former BCCI president as he felt Ganguly had ousted him as ODI captain.

The BCCI was looking into the matter as national selectors are bound by contract not to speak to the media.
