Pakistan: Passengers walk on tracks as Lahore Metro Train stops due to power outage, watch viral video

A major power outage hit Pakistan early Monday morning, leaving major cities without power due to a transmission line failure.

Lahore’s Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) also stopped, making it difficult for people to reach their workplaces, news sources said. Videos showing the train standing still, resulting in passengers walking on the tracks, have surfaced online and gone viral.

The viral video depicts the plight of Pakistani people who had to get off their transport and walk to the nearest station and later find alternative ways to reach their destinations. Even though these videos only run for a few seconds, the dramatic visuals have the potential to tell the world what the country is going through.

The outage comes at a time when the country’s fragile economy is grappling with problems such as a severe energy crisis. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered all federal ministries to reduce energy consumption by 30 percent. He also ordered the closure of markets by 8:30 p.m. and restaurants by 10 p.m.

The country often experiences power outages

It is the most widespread power outage since 2021, when Pakistan was left in the dark for hours due to a frequency drop in the power transmission system. In early October last year, Pakistan experienced a major power outage that left large parts of the country, including the provincial capitals Karachi and Lahore, without power for more than 12 hours.
