What Trump Must Do to Regain Support from Anti-Abortion Voters

Embattled in a series of legal and political battles, former President Donald Trump is getting his latest challenge from a key Republican constituency: pro-lifers against abortion.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, an influential conservative group with more than 1 million members, has threatened Trump — and any 2024 candidate — with losing the organization’s endorsement if he doesn’t support a national abortion ban.

“We will oppose any presidential candidate who refuses to adopt a minimum 15-week national standard to end painful late-term abortions while allowing states to enact additional protections,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.

Her comments came after the Trump campaign told The Washington Post he believed the Supreme Court got it right when it said abortion access should be decided at the state level.

Former President Donald Trump speaks to supporters during a press event at Mar-A-Lago on April 4 in Palm Beach Fla.
“President Trump’s claim that the Supreme Court has returned the issue of abortion solely to the states is a completely inaccurate reading of the Dobbs decision and is a morally indefensible position for a self-proclaimed pro-life presidential candidate to take,” Dannenfelser said. Life is a matter of human rights, not states’ rights.’

She said the only way to save the unborn is through federal protection.

“To take the position that it’s solely up to the states is an abdication of responsibility by anyone elected to federal office,” Dannenfelser said. “This is especially true for the president, more than any other federal official, because he or she has the responsibility to build national consensus and advance the most egregious human rights abuses of our time.”
